Leonard Peltier, a Native American activist who spent nearly half a century in prison for a murder he always said he didn't commit, has died, according to his family. He was 77.

Peltier's family said in a statement that he died Tuesday night at a hospital in Bismarck, North Dakota, after battling kidney cancer.

Peltier was convicted in 1977 of killing two FBI agents during a 1975 shootout on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He was sentenced to two life terms in prison.

Peltier maintained his innocence throughout his life, and his case became a rallying cry for Native American rights activists.

In recent years, Peltier's health had been declining, and he had been granted compassionate release from prison in 2022.
